Have you ever met a self-made man? You know…the person who pulled himself up by his own bootstraps, and was able to single handedly create the success that they experience today. The person who never made a mistake, never made a bad business decision, and won every game they ever played as a child and was the little league MVP!
If we are not careful, we can have a way of re-writing history and mis-remembering our life journey. We can forget some of the details from when we weren’t as smart and successful as we are today. The awkward developmental years when we floundered around trying to discover ourselves, and what we could be good at becomes a distant memory.
If we are not careful, we can find ourselves forgetting those who along the way lent a hand and helped us become who we are today. Seattle Seahawks Head Coach, Pete Carroll said it best,
“Every person holds so much power within themselves that needs to be let out. Sometimes they just need a little nudge, a little direction, a little support, a little coaching, and the greatest things can happen.”
Take a moment and make a list of names of people who had a positive influence on your life. Think about what they did, and said that made such an impact on you, and helped shape you into the person that you are today. See how big of a list that you can make. You may surprise yourself with how many people made individual decisions over time that helped you become the person you are today. And take the time to say THANK YOU in some way to them if you can. Give them a call, send a card, post a reflective thought on you social media account.
No man is an island. We are made to have relationships, and to have an impact on each other. Don’t rewrite your history by deleting those who helped you make it!
