3 easy ways to start a holiday tradition for your family

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! This is the time where spending time with those you love is so special. Alexander Smith once said, “Christmas is the day that holds all time together.” During this holiday season we are reminded of Christmas’ past, and the fond memories of family and friends that make the holiday season so special.

If you are like many of us, making holiday traditions may not come naturally. Though you want to make Christmas as special for your children as it was for you growing up, it can be easy to lose sight of what really makes this holiday season so special. Here’s a hint, it is not based on how much money you spend.

Think about it, the things that we remember most about Christmas is who we spent the day with, not a list of what gifts we received. In fact, I can hardly remember what gifts I received over the years except for GI Joe and Transformer action figures that I really wanted as a kid.

What make the holidays special for your family has more to do with the loving and supportive environment that you create in your home, than the list of items on the receipt. Making your home a refuge after a long year is one of most precious gifts you can give your family.

Here are 3 easy ways to start a holiday tradition for your family.

  1. Tell your family story. You’d be surprised with how much your story means to your children. Give them a peek into their history by sharing stories of your childhood, and even talk about how your met their mom. Your story creates an awareness that will never be taken away. They will be able to see themselves in your story, and that is a gift that priceless.
  2. Make a favorite dessert. Every family has that special holiday treat! Sweet potato pie, eggnog, sugar cookies, gingerbread cake, to name a few! It may be full of sugar, and wrong for your diet, but there is something about sweet comfort foods that makes it all worthwhile. Making a favorite dessert is something that your children will be able to take with them for the rest of their lives. And whenever they have that dish, they will always be reminded of you.
  3. Watch a favorite family movie. Watching your favorite family movie can be fun! It not only is a great way to spend time together as a family, but how you pick the movie as a family could be a part of the tradition. Again, this is more about the environment that you create than the gifts that you buy. Spending uninterrupted time together with no phones or technology will show your family how much they mean to you. The movie will also be a warm reminder for your children of your love as they get older. If they ever miss you, they can watch your movie and immediately be reminded of your love.
